Project: CloverQuest Textbook Cover
The CloverQuest is a gamified curriculum for younger audiences learning about a variety of topics. I was tasked with designing a textbook cover for the book that encapsulated the feel of an adventure with pinpoints along the way to mark progress.
Software/Tools Used:
Procreate
Process
I started this project with several sketches to present to my supervisors. To follow the “questy” feel that was desired, I offered four archetypes of medieval themed games: a knight, a shield, a castle, and a map. We settled on the map design as it would give the opportunity to tell the story of a journey rather than focus on any one destination.
Once the composition was selected, I jumped into pulling the composition together using Procreate’s perspective grid tool. I added graphics commonly found on old timey maps and styled the illustration in a kid-friendly format. Before this project started, I had drawn some simple graphics that would mark each chapter of the book. These icons were placed on small flags to indicate each leg of the journey near map icons that would be somewhat relevant to the lesson. I also added a friendly looking dragon to provide interactivity with the textbook title and provide a misty cloud effect near the top of the layout.
Takeaways
Art & illustration isn’t something I get nearly enough practice in, so it was a delight to have the opportunity to work in that area professionally. While the composition my supervisors wasn’t my first choice to select, it was an important lesson in why the client’s vision is king.
