Embryology Field Guide

To supplement NC 4-H’s Embryology curriculum, the Embryology Field Guide was designed to provide educators and youth with an engaging visual handbook to help differentiate between 35 distinct chicken breeds from around the world.

Software Used:

  • Adobe InDesign

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Procreate

  • Adobe Express

Process

The NC 4-H Embryology Field Guide features the classic 4-H colors (pre-rebrand) with drop shadows designed to help the design pop. The layout utilizes a simple design to help youth and educators differentiate the breeds listed. This includes maps, pinpoints, and icons.

In addition to its design, this project required extensive research and communication with breeders to obtain high-resolution images to display each breed in full detail. There were also several layers of feedback between myself and the project team.

Takeaways

As a hobbyist collector and a former chicken farmer, this was probably one of my favorite projects to work on. I love organizing and categorizing things in my daily life, so this was something that felt like fun instead of work. It also taught me how in-depth the research and stockpile process can be before a massive project like this can take off. I really enjoyed participating in reaching out to so many different breeders to collect their chicken pictures. I even photographed some myself.
